Microlens Arrays for 3D Imaging: Alignment Lessons from photonicSENS

OPTICS · INDUSTRY ANALYSIS

The VISION 2026 award programme describes photonicSENS’s light-field camera platform. Its optical arrangement shows why a microlens array needs an assembly and calibration specification, not just a component drawing.

The optical principle in the award submission

The organiser’s programme scheduled the shortlisted presentations for 7 October. In the photonicSENS submission, a microlens array sits between the main lens and the sensor, recording angular information used to reconstruct depth alongside the 2D image.

The submission describes active alignment and factory calibration. These are the entrant’s technical statements, rather than an independent qualification of every application. The programme also notes trade-offs between field of view, working distance and depth precision.

Turn alignment into an acceptance requirement

For precision optical component sourcing, define array pitch, surface form and the datums used to position the array relative to the sensor. Ask how centration, tilt and axial spacing will be measured after assembly.

Approve a representative module before committing production tooling. A lens array that meets its drawing can still require adjustment when placed in a specific sensor stack.

Separate the optic from the depth result

Request a calibration procedure, traceable reference targets and a test across the required depth and field. Depth output depends on the full optical and processing configuration; it cannot be guaranteed from a generic array specification.

For custom optical module projects, include the sensor, processing interface and environmental conditions in the RFQ. TUOLAN does not claim to supply photonicSENS cameras or reproduce its proprietary camera platform.

Buyer RFQ checklist

  • Specify array pitch, surface form and sensor alignment datums.
  • Measure tilt, centration and axial spacing on the assembled module.
  • Validate depth output against traceable targets across the required field.
