Precision Aspheric Lens Acceptance: Link the Surface Prescription to the Test Report

Published by TUOLAN TRADE on 2026-10-13 · Updated

Generic illustration of optical component fabrication, not a claim about the chosen aspheric fabrication method

OPTICS · TECHNICAL INSIGHT

An aspheric lens sample should be approved against a controlled surface prescription and a defined test method. A focal-length check alone does not document whether the intended aspheric form has been made and assembled correctly.

Technical basis: the aspheric form is part of the design

Edmund Optics’s aspheric-lens reference explains that conic constants and higher-order coefficients shape the surface used to manage aberrations. It also distinguishes fabrication approaches. The note is technical background, not evidence that every asphere meets the same imaging performance.

This insight addresses drawing-to-report traceability, a narrower issue than the website’s existing aspheric-versus-spherical RFQ guide. No new manufacturer product is announced.

Freeze the prescription before comparing quotations

For precision polished aspheric lens sourcing, provide an unambiguous surface equation, coefficient units, sign convention and drawing revision. Include material, clear aperture and the reference used to locate the surface relative to the mechanical part.

Ask the supplier to identify any proposed prescription change before tooling or fabrication. A manufacturability change can be reasonable, but it should be accepted through optical review rather than introduced silently into a quotation.

Agree what the test result contains

Specify the measurement aperture and whether the reported surface error is expressed as peak-to-valley, RMS or another agreed quantity. Describe permitted fitting or removed terms and ask for the measurement method and its uncertainty. These choices affect whether two reports can be compared meaningfully.

Check thickness and centration separately from the surface-form record. A measured surface can match its prescription while the assembled lens still requires review against the intended optical axis and spacing.

Connect the component to an application test

For the broader aspherical lens product category, specify the design wavelength, conjugates, mount and relevant spot or imaging criterion. Approve a sample only when the controlled drawing, metrology record and application test refer to the same revision. This is TUOLAN’s recommended review sequence, not a blanket diffraction-limited performance claim.

Buyer RFQ checklist

  • Identify the surface equation, units, sign convention and revision.
  • Agree measurement aperture, error convention and fitted terms.
  • Tie surface, centration and application results to the same sample.
