AR Coating Acceptance: Define Incidence Angle, Polarization and Spectral Reporting

OPTICS · TECHNICAL INSIGHT

An antireflection coating quotation needs a wavelength range, incidence-angle conditions, polarization and a clear reflectance limit. Without those conditions, two promising transmission curves may describe different tests rather than equivalent coatings.

Technical basis: coating performance is conditional

Edmund Optics’s coating note explains that optical coatings are designed for specified incidence angles and polarization states. It describes the thin-film interference basis for their behavior. This technical reference has no stated publication date on the reviewed page.

This is TUOLAN’s original analysis of acceptance wording, not a coating product release or a copied supplier coating table.

Write a measurable spectral limit

For custom optical coating requests, state whether the requirement limits reflectance at every wavelength or averages it over a band. Identify the spectral interval, calculation method and any sampling requirements. An average can conceal a local feature that matters to a narrowband instrument.

Separate per-surface coating performance from whole-component transmission. For a coated optical window, material absorption and both faces belong in the component test. Do not convert a per-surface reflectance claim directly into a whole-system transmission promise.

Represent the installed light, not only a convenient test beam

Describe nominal incidence angle and any angular spread. State whether the source is unpolarized, linearly polarized or has a defined operating state. Request data for the conditions relevant to the design; a normal-incidence curve alone may not characterize an inclined or converging path.

Approve the coated part and the record

Agree how witness samples relate to the delivered substrate, coating run and location. Record the coated faces, spectral measurements and any environmental checks actually required by the application. Keep functional acceptance separate from cosmetic surface inspection.

The useful conclusion is an acceptance statement with explicit conditions: which part, which band, which angles and which polarization. TUOLAN’s component sourcing requires project review and does not inherit a manufacturer’s standard coating performance automatically.

Buyer RFQ checklist

  • Distinguish maximum-in-band from average reflectance limits.
  • Specify angle, angular spread, polarization and coated faces.
  • Link witness samples and measured delivered parts to the coating run.
