IFA 2026 in Berlin confirmed that smart pet care is moving upmarket in Europe: Whisker priced the Litter-Robot 5 at €999 for its German launch, while PETKIT and PETLIBRO spent the month showing where AI features actually help — and where cloud dependence hurts.

For buyers and private-label sellers watching the smart pet device category, three storylines from the past two weeks matter more than any single product launch.

Premium self-cleaning litter boxes go European

Whisker presented the Litter-Robot 5 at IFA 2026 with a €999 suggested retail price for Germany and other European markets from Q4 2026, alongside a €140 LitterHopper automatic litter-refill accessory and the more compact Litter-Robot EVO at €699. In the US, the company also opened an official TikTok Shop selling the Litter-Robot 4, EVO and bundles — a channel move worth watching for any brand selling pet hardware to American consumers. Separately, Whisker launched US$499/US$599 litter-box furniture cabinets, signalling that accessories and home integration are becoming a second revenue engine for the category.

AI features are getting specific

PETKIT’s August 18 launch introduced Kitbo, an AI assistant that connects feeder, fountain and litter-box data, plus an AutoSeal waste heat-sealing system. The company also previewed an OTA update adding cat vomit detection to three camera-equipped feeder and fountain models, and began selling a non-circulating AI water fountain in Japan after a crowdfunding round that raised more than 19 million yen. The pattern: AI in pet devices is shifting from vague “smart” labels to single, verifiable functions — identity recognition, event logging, health anomaly alerts.

The offline lesson

PETLIBRO’s CEO published a post-mortem of an August 11–12 cloud outage that disrupted connections, logging, notifications and video. The company’s mitigation — most devices kept executing their pre-set schedules offline — is now effectively a purchasing criterion. For anyone specifying or private-labelling feeders and fountains, local schedule storage and graceful offline behavior belong in the requirement sheet, not the wish list.

What US-market sellers should take from this

  • Premium pricing holds. A €999 litter robot and US$499–599 accessory furniture show the high end of the US/EU market is still expanding.
  • Insurance partnerships are emerging. Tractive’s deal with Swiss insurer Calingo subsidises tracker subscriptions — a model likely to reach the US pet-insurance market.
  • Reliability sells. Offline operation, anti-pinch mechanics and deodorisation systems are now front-page features, not footnotes.
