AI Camera Litter Box Takes a CES 2026 Pet Tech Award

Pet hardware has quietly rebuilt itself around the camera. In the current line-up from one of the category leaders, nearly every flagship product name ends with “with Camera”, and the differentiator being sold is not the camera itself but what the camera measures.

The specification pages on PETKIT’s own store, reviewed on 26 September 2026, show a product line organised around imaging. The litter box range now reads Purobot Crystal Duo with Camera, Purobot Ultra with Camera, Purobot Max Pro 2 with Camera and Purobot Max 3 with Camera. The feeder range includes YumShare Dual-hopper 2 with Camera and YumShare Solo 2 with Camera, and the water fountain range includes EverSweet Ultra with Camera.

The flagship litter box is marketed as “powered by PETKIT’s award-winning AI Health ecosystem, recognized with the Microsoft AI Innovation Award at CES 2026”, with a larger entry and an included Fence 2.0, and its own product page carries roughly 210 customer reviews. The same catalogue covers an RFID-based multi-pet feeder and a wet-food feeder, and a companion app is sold alongside the hardware.

Why the camera moved from accessory to core specification

  • Imaging is how the product claims a health outcome. Weight, litter visits and feeding behaviour are only meaningful when they are attributed to an individual animal. Multi-pet households are the hard case, which is why identification technology, whether visual or RFID, sits at the centre of the specification.
  • An award badge is a market-positioning asset, not a component specification. The CES 2026 recognition is stated by the vendor and describes the software ecosystem. A sourcing team should separate the marketing claim from the sensor, module and compute specification underneath it.
  • Review counts are a demand signal with a limit. Roughly 210 reviews on one product page indicates an established listing, not unit sales, and review counts on a brand’s own store are not comparable with reviews on a marketplace. Use it as a maturity indicator only.
  • Camera-per-product multiplies the sensor bill of materials. When a brand puts a camera in litter boxes, feeders and fountains at once, its annual module volume rises across several product families. That is a meaningful change in purchasing leverage for whoever supplies those modules.

How to source camera-first pet devices

  • Specify the camera against the task it performs, not the resolution. Individual-pet recognition, waste-area imaging and night-time monitoring impose different requirements on sensor sensitivity, frame rate, field of view and infrared illumination. A 1080p module chosen for video chat will underperform at low light in a litter drawer.
  • Decide where inference runs before you choose the module. On-device inference keeps latency low and reduces recurring cloud cost, but it raises module cost and power draw. Cloud inference reverses that trade. On a battery-powered product, that decision constrains the whole electrical design.
  • Treat multi-pet identification as the acceptance test. Ask a supplier to demonstrate attribution accuracy in a household with two or more animals of similar size and coat. This is where visual and RFID approaches separate, and where a specification is most likely to fail in the field rather than the lab.
  • Check what the data path costs you. A pet health feature implies storage, retention and privacy obligations in each market you sell into. Confirm whether video leaves the device and who holds it, because that shapes both your cloud bill and your compliance work.
  • Confirm replacement-part availability for the imaging module. Cameras fail faster than pumps. If a supplier cannot sell the imaging module as a spare, warranty cost lands on your channel rather than on the factory.
