Laser Damage Threshold Review: Compare Test Conditions Before Comparing Numbers

OPTICS · TECHNICAL INSIGHT

A laser damage threshold value is meaningful only with its test conditions. Before selecting an optic, compare wavelength, temporal regime, beam definition and exposure protocol rather than ranking suppliers by the largest reported number.

Technical basis: threshold is not an unconditional survival promise

Edmund Optics’s LIDT guide distinguishes pulsed-laser fluence from continuous-wave intensity and explains the statistical nature of damage testing. Beam diameter, pulse duration and sampling affect how a reported result should be interpreted.

This is TUOLAN’s original technical procurement analysis, not a new product announcement. Source concepts are distinguished from application recommendations; published supplier examples do not become TUOLAN specifications.

Build an evidence comparison instead of a price-only table

For laser optical coating requests, ask each supplier to complete the same test-condition record. Keep the reported value with its units and method. Do not convert a pulsed result into a continuous-wave rating merely because both describe a high-power application.

Evidence to request Question it answers
Wavelength and temporal regime Was the optic tested with a relevant source?
Beam size and profile convention What illuminated region and local exposure does the value describe?
Exposure sequence and sample record What observations support the reported threshold?

Link the test sample to the delivered optic

Record substrate, coated faces, coating revision and cleaning or handling state. Ask whether evidence comes from a representative component or a witness sample. For laser mirror procurement, include incidence angle and polarization in the comparison.

If the instrument’s source differs from the test laser, request a qualified assessment of the difference. Scaling estimates are not a substitute for evidence under an agreed acceptance method.

State the decision and its limits

Choose a supplier against the application’s approved operating conditions and required validation. A threshold report does not eliminate contamination, alignment or operational risks, and TUOLAN does not assign an unverified laser-power rating to standard catalog optics. Retain the report and sample identity with the project’s acceptance record.

Buyer RFQ checklist

  • Keep threshold values with units, wavelength and laser temporal regime.
  • Record beam-profile convention, exposure sequence and sample identity.
  • Require evidence for the delivered substrate and coating configuration.
