OPTOWL’s Metalens Concept: What Compact Machine Vision Lens Buyers Should Check
OPTICS · INDUSTRY ANALYSIS
OPTOWL scheduled its infrared metalens concept for VISION Stuttgart, held on 6–8 October 2026. The proposal gives buyers of compact machine vision lenses a reason to review optical performance alongside the available mounting space.

A concept model, with a recent exhibition context
OPTOWL announced the concept on 11 September 2026 and scheduled its first display at VISION Stuttgart on 6–8 October. This article revisits that announcement after the exhibition dates; it does not treat it as a new October product launch or independently confirm what was demonstrated at the booth.
The company describes an infrared optical module intended for installations with limited space, including cameras mounted near robot end effectors. It remains a concept ahead of mass production, with sales planned for fiscal 2027. Its “world’s first” description is based on the company’s own research.
Published reference specifications are not final production specifications. Buyers should request a current drawing and test report before using the concept as a design baseline.

Specify the wavelength before choosing the lens architecture
For custom optical lenses and components, define the operating band, illumination and detector response together. The announcement’s broad infrared description should not be converted into an assumed visible, SWIR, MWIR or LWIR specification. Ask for the exact wavelength range and measured imaging performance across it.
Compare the complete camera package
A shorter optical assembly can help a constrained installation, but system fit also depends on the sensor plane, clear aperture, mount, electronics and protective enclosure. Compare resolution and contrast at the required working distance and field of view, rather than accepting compact dimensions alone.
Request centre and edge MTF at agreed spatial frequencies, distortion data, transmission and temperature conditions. Check alignment tolerances and the assembly acceptance procedure on representative samples. These are TUOLAN procurement recommendations, not performance claims for the OPTOWL concept.
Keep conventional optics in the comparison
Review the visible and VIS–NIR lens configurations when the application operates in those bands, and specify optical coatings against the actual substrate and wavelength range. A catalog category does not establish equivalence to a metalens or compatibility with this concept.
TUOLAN supports project-specific component sourcing. This article does not imply that TUOLAN stocks, distributes or manufactures OPTOWL metalenses.
Buyer RFQ checklist
- State the detector, operating wavelengths, working distance and required field of view.
- Agree MTF, distortion and transmission measurements with their test conditions.
- Review the complete module drawing, mounting tolerances and environmental requirements.
- Confirm sample availability, development stage and production specification before committing a design.
