Cylindrical Lens Axis Alignment: Specify Mounting Datums Before Sample Approval
OPTICS · TECHNICAL INSIGHT
A cylindrical lens drawing should connect the powered axis to the mounting datums. Before approving a sample, agree which faces locate the optic and how axis rotation, wedge and centration will be checked in that arrangement.

Technical basis: the outer shape is not the optical axis
Edmund Optics’s cylinder-lens note distinguishes powered and unpowered directions, and identifies wedge, centration and axial twist as separate errors. These concepts explain why a mechanically seated lens may still require optical alignment.
This is a TUOLAN technical insight based on an existing manufacturer reference, not a new product announcement. It develops an assembly acceptance workflow rather than repeating the site’s general beam-shaping RFQ guide.

Start with the assembly drawing
For positive cylindrical lenses, identify the powered direction on the drawing and connect it to an accessible datum. State whether the fixture locates a flat face, the outer edges or a separate carrier. Mark the required rotation adjustment before the assembly is locked.
Apply the same datum discipline to negative cylindrical lenses; the sign of the optical power does not define the permitted mounting error. Select tolerances from the system’s sensitivity and available alignment travel, not from an unrelated catalog optic.
Use a two-stage sample decision
First check the component against its drawing. Then mount it in a production-like fixture and observe the beam or image at the specified wavelength and position. Record whether an acceptable result requires decentring or rotation beyond the adjustment allowed in the final assembly.
A successful result in an adjustable laboratory holder may not transfer to a fixed carrier. Capture the final setting and repeat the installation to assess whether the datum scheme is reproducible.
The practical acceptance decision
Approve the datum-to-axis relationship and the mounted optical result together. This approach helps separate a component error from a fixture error without treating every beam shift as a manufacturing defect. TUOLAN’s recommendations are project review inputs, not a promised tolerance for every cylindrical lens.
Buyer RFQ checklist
- Mark the powered axis and the faces that locate the component.
- Specify wedge, centration and axis rotation separately.
- Repeat the mounted test within the final assembly’s adjustment range.
