Achromatic Doublet Acceptance: Check Color Focus at a Shared Image Plane

Published by TUOLAN TRADE on 2026-10-15 · Updated

Generic illustration of optical lens elements, not a specified achromatic doublet

OPTICS · TECHNICAL INSIGHT

An achromatic doublet should be evaluated at the wavelengths and conjugates of its intended system. To assess color-focus behavior, define a common image-plane test and record any wavelength-specific refocusing separately.

Technical basis: achromatic does not mean every wavelength is identical

Edmund Optics’s achromat note explains how multiple optical elements provide additional freedom to correct aberrations. Its discussion of color correction does not establish identical performance at all wavelengths or across every field and aperture.

This is TUOLAN’s original technical procurement analysis, not a new product announcement. Source concepts are distinguished from application recommendations; published supplier examples do not become TUOLAN specifications.

Choose wavelengths that represent the actual instrument

For achromatic doublet sourcing, state the source spectrum or channel wavelengths, object distance and required image plane. Include aperture and whether performance is required on axis only or across a field. Request the current optical prescription or supplier performance data appropriate to those conditions.

Do not substitute a coating transmission band for a demonstrated color-correction band. The coating and lens design answer related but different questions.

Separate common-plane performance from best focus

Record the image or spot criterion at the agreed shared sensor plane. If the test also finds best focus for each wavelength, store those positions separately. A set of individually refocused images can be useful evidence, but it does not by itself show simultaneous multiwavelength performance at a fixed detector.

Keep illumination bandwidth and exposure conditions controlled so the comparison can be repeated. For a real imaging task, use a representative target rather than relying solely on a statement that the center appears sharp.

Approve the assembly details with the optical result

Confirm orientation, spacing, usable aperture and handling requirements before mounting. Review spherical lens alternatives only under comparable conditions. A doublet may be appropriate for the project, but its category name is not a performance guarantee.

The release record should identify the tested specimen, wavelengths, shared plane and accepted image criterion. TUOLAN can review that project evidence without claiming an unsupported bandwidth or universal imaging result.

Buyer RFQ checklist

  • Define operational wavelengths, conjugates, aperture and field.
  • Record shared-plane performance separately from wavelength-specific best focus.
  • Keep coating transmission requirements distinct from color-correction evidence.
