Corning-Verizon Fiber Deal: AI Cable Demand

Multi-year fiber supply agreements, new US manufacturing capacity and fresh hollow-core fiber orders all landed within the same week. For buyers of fiber optic cables and connectivity, the signal is clear: AI infrastructure is now the primary driver of fiber demand.

Between September 8 and September 10, three separate announcements sketched out where the fiber optic cable market is heading. Corning and Verizon disclosed a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar supply agreement covering more than 80 million miles of high-density fiber and connectivity solutions between 2027 and 2032. Prysmian confirmed a roughly US$1.25 billion investment to more than double its US fiber and cable capacity across three states. And Relativity Networks, a hollow-core fiber startup, raised US$22 million and landed a US$40 million follow-on order from a hyperscale cloud customer.

Corning–Verizon: a supply framework built around AI

According to Corning’s September 8 press release, the agreement supports Verizon’s broadband expansion as well as backbone networks designed for generative-AI workloads. The 2027–2032 window matters: operators are now locking in fiber supply years ahead of construction, a pattern that until recently was reserved for semiconductor capacity. Corning separately signed a long-term cable supply agreement with network operator Zayo, which plans to add 15,000 route miles by 2030.

Manufacturing capacity follows the demand

Prysmian’s US expansion covers preform, fiber and cable production in three states and includes additional FlexRibbon high-density cable output, creating about 600 manufacturing jobs. STL, meanwhile, told investors it plans to invest roughly 10 billion rupees per year over three fiscal years to expand preform, fiber and cable capacity by 50%, and disclosed internal R&D programs in hollow-core and multi-core fiber plus co-packaged optics (CPO) and near-packaged optics (NPO).

The week in fiber demand signals
Announcement Date Scale Why it matters to buyers
Corning–Verizon supply agreement Sep 8, 2026 80M+ fiber miles, 2027–2032 Operators lock multi-year supply; spot capacity tightens
Prysmian US expansion Sep 2026 ≈US$1.25B, 3 states US fiber capacity to more than double; FlexRibbon output grows
Relativity hollow-core order Sep 2026 US$40M follow-on + US$22M raise Hollow-core moves from field tests to purchase orders
STL Lakshya roadmap Sep 3, 2026 ≈10B INR/yr, 3 years 50% capacity expansion; CPO/NPO and hollow-core R&D

China’s tender market sends a price signal

China Mobile’s 2026–2027 general optical cable tender published its candidate list on September 4, with 18 candidates and 17 bidding at the raised ceiling of 7.0998 billion yuan (before tax). The ceiling had been lifted about 8.5% after the first July tender failed on pricing. For international buyers, the tender is a useful reference point: volume is concentrated among the top Chinese manufacturers, and floor pricing has moved up.

What this means for sourcing

  • Lead times deserve attention. Multi-year operator agreements absorb factory capacity first; spot buyers should confirm production slots earlier than usual.
  • High-density designs are the growth segment. Ribbon and intermittently bonded ribbon (IBR) constructions feature in nearly every announcement. STL also announced US OFNP (plenum) certification for its 48–576 fiber pre-terminated trunk assemblies aimed at AI data-center riser paths on September 10.
  • Hollow-core is moving from demo to purchase order. Relativity’s US$40 million follow-on order, placed after an inter-data-center field test, suggests hyperscalers are beginning to buy rather than only evaluate.
