Fiber Ribbon and Mini-Cable RFQ Checklist for B2B Projects
Compact fiber products are usually selected around an installation or component interface, not by fiber count alone. Two cables with the same nominal count can differ in fiber type, coating, ribbon structure, outside diameter, bend performance, mechanical strength and flame requirement.
Identify the product form and application
State whether the requirement is coated fiber, tight-buffer fiber, bonded or rollable ribbon, bare ribbon, mini cable or a terminated assembly. Describe where it is used: optical component, pigtail, equipment interior, access network, building, data center or another controlled environment.
Define the optical construction
- Single-mode, multimode or specialty fiber type
- Fiber count, color sequence and identification method
- Coating or buffer diameter and material
- Ribbon pitch, ribbon geometry or cable outside diameter
- Sheath material, color, marking and ripcord requirement
If the product mates with an MT, FA or another compact interface, provide the interface drawing and allowable dimensional variation.
State performance at the relevant wavelengths
Define attenuation, bend radius or bend-loss requirement, length and test wavelength. Mechanical requirements may include tensile, crush, torsion, repeated bending or stripping performance. Environmental requirements may include operating temperature, thermal cycling, humidity or aging.
Do not treat compliance labels as interchangeable
Flame ratings, material declarations and market-access documents apply to specific constructions and scopes. State the destination country and required standard, then ask the supplier to confirm that the certificate or test report covers the proposed product rather than a similar cable.
Plan packaging and traceability
Agree on reel or coil format, standard length, length tolerance, splice policy, labeling, batch identification and test-report frequency. Prototype and production quantities should be listed separately because setup, test and packaging routes may differ.
Fiber-product RFQ checklist
Include the application, fiber type, count, geometry, outside diameter, buffer and sheath material, wavelength, attenuation, bend, mechanical and environmental requirements, length, packaging, destination market, required certificates, sample quantity and annual demand.
