Openreach Moves to 1.6T Coherent Optics and Launches National 800G Services
FIBRE & OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS
A UK wholesale-network deployment has moved 1.6 Tb/s coherent wavelengths and national 800G client services from demonstration language into an operating product roadmap.
What Openreach and Ciena announced
On 7 October 2026, Openreach said it is deploying Ciena Waveserver equipment powered by WaveLogic 6 coherent technology in its Optical Spectrum Extended Access portfolio. The design provides 3.2 Tb/s of scalable capacity over diverse fibre routes and carries 400G and 800G client traffic over dedicated 1.6 Tb/s wavelengths.
The stated platform density is also commercially relevant: a 2RU chassis can support up to 32 × 400G services. Openreach says the rollout introduces national 800G services for the first time, serving data-centre interconnects, private clouds, cable-landing stations, core nodes and resilient route-diverse links.

Why this matters to component buyers
The headline line rate is only one part of the bill of materials. A deployment at this density also raises requirements for connector cleanliness, fibre routing, module thermal resistance, host electrical compatibility and field-replaceable design. Buyers comparing optical transceivers and fibre connectivity should specify the client interface, reach, wavelength plan, FEC expectations, power ceiling and operating temperature before requesting samples.
TUOLAN’s current 10G–100G transceiver catalog is a separate product range. This report does not claim that those modules support Openreach’s 800G services or 1.6T coherent wavelengths. Match each project to verified host and optical specifications.
RFQ checklist for 800G and 1.6T projects
- Separate client rate from coherent line rate; they are not interchangeable specifications.
- State the required form factor, optical reach, fibre type and connector interface.
- Request host-platform interoperability evidence and thermal test conditions.
- Define whether route diversity, monitoring and managed maintenance are part of the scope.
