Drawing-based optical sourcing
Custom Bi-Concave Lenses
Specify custom bi-concave, or double-concave, lenses for optical groups requiring negative power and two concave surfaces. We review the prescription, aperture, material, mounting details and inspection requirements for drawing-based sourcing.
Control the two concave surfaces as a complete element
Provide both radii with the surface numbering and sign convention used in the optical design. The focal-length sign, reference wavelength and center thickness help distinguish the required element from a superficially similar catalog form.
Define the clear aperture alongside the edge geometry. A deep concave profile or thin center can influence handling, metrology and mounting. Include any minimum center thickness, edge bevel and contact-zone requirements already established by the designer.
Bi-concave or plano-concave?
The two forms distribute negative optical power differently between their surfaces. Compare them at your intended conjugates, aperture and wavelength, then specify the selected prescription. A focal-length match alone does not establish equivalent aberration behavior or mechanical fit.
Applications and system inputs
- Negative elements in multi-element optical groups
- Drawing-defined beam expansion optics
- Illumination and projection optical paths
Share the operating conditions and required optical performance for your application. Material, geometry and inspection scope are reviewed together before quotation.
Bi-Concave Lenses specification checklist
The table identifies the inputs needed to review this lens family. The approved drawing and quotation define the supplied configuration, tolerances and documentation.
| Specification | Information for your drawing or RFQ |
|---|---|
| Surface data | Two concave radii with numbering and sign convention |
| Focal length | Negative EFL at the specified design wavelength |
| Thickness | Center thickness, edge thickness and permitted variation |
| Mount interface | Contact zones, bevels, diameter tolerance and datums |
| Material / coating | Named substrate and specified transmission or AR band |
| Verification | Figure, centration and clear-aperture measurement plan |
Send a complete lens RFQ
- Attach the controlled optical drawing or system layout, including revision and units.
- State the wavelength, substrate grade, coating and operating environment.
- Identify optical and mechanical acceptance limits and required test records.
- Provide prototype quantity, expected production demand and requested delivery date.
Include the destination market, packaging requirements and whether you need loose elements, a matched set or a mounted assembly. If a parameter is still open, identify it as a design-review item.
Send the drawing and application inputs so the selected manufacturing route can be reviewed. Material availability, MOQ, lead time and achievable tolerances are confirmed for your project.
Bi-Concave Lenses FAQ
Can I specify the same radius on both faces?
Yes, if the optical prescription calls for a symmetric element. Show the two surfaces and their sign convention clearly.
What if the design has a very thin center?
Share the drawing before setting acceptance limits. Material, aperture, radius and handling requirements need to be reviewed together.
