Custom Bi-Convex Lenses

Review custom bi-convex, also called double-convex, lenses for finite-conjugate imaging, relay optics and illumination. Both surfaces are convex, with radii selected to meet the prescription rather than assumed to be equal.

Provide both surface radii and the object-to-image layout

The two radii and center thickness define the element together with the material. For a symmetric form, identify equal radii explicitly; for an asymmetric design, label the entrance and exit surfaces and state the light direction.

Finite object and image distances, magnification, field size and aperture determine the useful lens form. Send these with the image-quality requirement, such as spot size or a specified system MTF test. The component surface specification should be traced to that performance requirement.

Single element or achromatic doublet?

A bi-convex singlet can be appropriate for a defined narrow band. For a wider spectral range, compare its residual chromatic error with an achromatic doublet in the same optical system. The additional element and assembly requirements should be justified by the needed image quality.

Applications and system inputs

  • Finite-conjugate image relays
  • Instrument focusing elements
  • Projection and illumination groups

Share the operating conditions and required optical performance for your application. Material, geometry and inspection scope are reviewed together before quotation.

Bi-Convex Lenses specification checklist

The table identifies the inputs needed to review this lens family. The approved drawing and quotation define the supplied configuration, tolerances and documentation.

Specification Information for your drawing or RFQ
Prescription Entrance and exit radii, center thickness and material
Conjugates Object distance, image distance and magnification
Aperture Physical diameter, clear aperture and working beam
Optical target EFL, field coverage and aberration or imaging criterion
Coating Spectral band and reflectance specification for both faces
Mechanical details Bevels, mounting datums, edge thickness and centration

Send a complete lens RFQ

  1. Attach the controlled optical drawing or system layout, including revision and units.
  2. State the wavelength, substrate grade, coating and operating environment.
  3. Identify optical and mechanical acceptance limits and required test records.
  4. Provide prototype quantity, expected production demand and requested delivery date.

Include the destination market, packaging requirements and whether you need loose elements, a matched set or a mounted assembly. If a parameter is still open, identify it as a design-review item.

Bi-Convex Lenses FAQ

Does bi-convex mean both radii are identical?

It identifies two convex surfaces. State both radii; equality should be an explicit drawing requirement.

Can I use it for broadband imaging?

Assess the chromatic error across your actual band. An achromatic doublet may be worth comparing when a singlet cannot meet the required image quality.
